No Sew Projects
By Jen Carter
Welcome to our creative world of sewing.
Many crafters are a bit afraid to venture into the world of sewing at first. Sewing machines seem difficult to use when you don’t have much experience, and the vast selection serves only to make it more confusing as to where to begin. One of the best ways to venture into the sewing world for the first time without the aid of class or instructions, is to try out a “no sew” project. A great choice for this would be no sew fleece projects.
Fleece is one of the better fabric choices for “no sew” projects because it is a hardy material and the edges will not fray, so you can leave the fleece unfinished and not worry about hemming. With fleece, finishing edges is only to make the product look better, not for utility reasons. Blankets make a good no sew project, and there’s no pattern involved.
You can make a simple no sew blanket with two pieces of fleece, one patterned and the other a plain but matching color. Each piece should be 1-1/2 yards in length. To start, lay the plain fleece, face side down on a flat surface, then lay the patterned fleece, face side up right on top. Next you smooth the material to make sure there are no wrinkles, and pin the edges. Cut 4” squares on each corner and then cut 5” strips on each side (the strips can be to the length you prefer. Once that’s done, simply tie the strips into a very tight double knot. Washing and drying the blanket should make the knots tighter still, and you have an easy no sew gift in no time at all.
